Sunset Project

For this coastal vacation home overlooking the dramatic Pacific Grove coastline, owned by a client in the wine industry, we were tasked with transforming a fully dilapidated mid-century gem into an elevated, refined, and low-maintenance retreat with 200° unobstructed ocean views. The home was originally purchased by the client and her late husband as their future retirement sanctuary, so the redesign needed to honor that legacy while creating a space that felt peaceful, restorative, and deeply personal. Because of its proximity to the beach, we prioritized durable materials and surface selections that could withstand sand, salt air, and the rhythms of coastal living without compromise.

While she didn’t want to lean fully into classic mid-century aesthetics, she wanted to “high five” it, acknowledging the spirit without being constrained by it. The kitchen is intentionally simple and understated, with all busy functional zones hidden out of sight: a concealed pantry, an integrated Miele coffee machine, and panel-ready Sub-Zero refrigeration and Cove dishwasher fully blended into the warm walnut cabinetry. The chef’s island features both induction and gas cooking options, two burners each, paired with a sleek downdraft ventilation system, while the dining island was custom crafted from the same stone slab for a seamless continuity of material language. Throughout the home, Waterworks fixtures elevate both kitchen and baths, adding refined detail and timeless craftsmanship to a home designed to age beautifully and live effortlessly against the backdrop of the California coast.
